Reports from The Information and Bloomberg suggest that Apple is working on a relatively affordable version of its mixed-reality headset. The device is likely to release in 2024 or early 2025 after the flagship first-gen model is released this year. However, even as Apple doubles down on its MR headsets, it is said to be putting plans to launch its much-rumored augmented reality glasses on hold. According to the reports, the AR glasses have been put on hold due to various technical challenges and the increasing focus on the two MR headsets. The glasses were already rumored to have been delayed to 2025 or 2026.
Apple’s ‘Budget’ Mixed Reality Headset
Apple’s flagship MR headset is said to come with cutting-edge technology that will include more than 10 cameras and an array of sensors to determine where the user is looking. It is also said to be powered by a Mac M2 processor and uses a dedicated chip to showcase AR and VR imagery. The flagship device will reportedly have 4K internal displays for each eye, but the more affordable model could include lower-resolution lenses to cut costs. Other changes in the lower-priced device could include the use of fewer cameras and sensors, as well as less powerful processors.
Earlier leaks suggest that Apple’s first-gen flagship MR headset will be called ‘Reality Pro’ and run a custom operating system, dubbed xrOS. Reports point to a spring announcement before the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) takes place in June, but could be out-of-reach for some potential buyers with an expected price tag of a whopping $3,000. Apple’s cheaper MR headset is still a while away, so it will be interesting to see how it shapes up.
