Tesla takes pride in its futuristic innovations, but not all features are popular with users. The automaker’s cars are notable for several things, including their Autopilot software. However, some drivers don’t appreciate the over-reliance on the touchscreen or voice commands to access basic controls. This prompted the commencement of a project which will bring physical buttons to the Model 3 and Y. Launched on Indiegogo, the crowdfunded button-based accessory is called Ctrl-Bar. It is intended to optimize the driving experience by offering quick responses when operated. It comprises four push buttons and two knobs, and takes the form of a sleek bar which can be affixed below the main display. Users can control the lights, cabin temperature, and much more, thanks to programmable buttons. How Ctrl-Bar’s Buttons Work Ctrl-Bar connects to a user’s smartphone via Bluetooth. A concealed USB cable plugged into a port in the rear center console supplies power to the accessory. Users will need to install an app on their phone, which runs in the background and detects any changes made using the buttons. The app then shares this information with the car using Tesla’s API. An active internet connection (cellular or Wi-Fi) is needed for Ctrl-Bar to work, but a Premium Connectivity subscription isn’t required. It should be noted that drivers will experience a minor delay when using the buttons on Ctrl-Bar, since the app will need a few seconds to communicate with the Tesla. However, any changes made using the buttons will be reflected on the center screen. Drivers can use the scroll wheels to set their preferred temperature, while the four buttons can be programmed with a variety of shortcuts, including Seat Heaters, Dog Mode, Defrost Mode, Homelink, Open Trunk/Frunk/Chargeport, and more. The accessory even lets users cast bright LED lights onto the center console and front footwells. Speed trap warnings will also be offered as a subscription-based service. When enabled, Ctrl-Bar will scan for speed traps close by and share visual notifications with the driver. If it determines that the driver is speeding, it will play an audio alert for the driver to slow down. The platform adds that the tool will constantly improve thanks to frequent software updates. Since Tesla drivers are the target market, it will also welcome suggestions on how to improve the user experience. Apart from the potential benefits, there are some challenges for Ctrl-Bar. According to Greenmission, the makers of the product, the major roadblocks include the development of the smartphone app and figuring out how to maintain a steady connection between Ctrl-Bar and the connected phone. Despite these concerns, the project seems to have gained momentum on Indiegogo. At the time of publication, over $20,000 has been raised toward the total goal of $27,203 needed to begin production. Interested Tesla owners can choose from the $260 early-bird or the standard $270 crowdfunding options.
