The new chips feature Zen 4 microarchitecture and include RDNA 3 integrated graphics. However, despite the promise of a high-performance iGPU, the latest development now suggests that potential buyers could be disappointed with an unwanted change in the spec sheet.
AMD has updated the product page for its upcoming Ryzen 7040 mobile CPU lineup, listing lower GPU clock speeds than earlier. As spotted by Twitter user SquashBionic, the latest listing shows that the iGPU clock speeds for all three upcoming Phoenix chips have been reduced by 200MHz, in a move that could affect the gaming performance in some resource-intensive titles.
As per the listing, the top chip in the lineup, the Ryzen 9 7940HS, has been downgraded from 3GHz to 2.8GHz, while the Ryzen 7 7840HS has gone from 2.9GHz to 2.7GHz. As for the Ryzen 5 7640HS, it is now only expected to have a 2.6GHz iGPU instead of the 2.8GHz listed earlier.
AMD Phoenix CPU Specifications
The iGPU in the 7940HS and 7840HS is a Radeon 780M chip based on the RDNA 3 architecture with 12 compute units (CU). The 7640HS, however, has an iGPU based on the Radeon 760M (also RDNA 3), with only eight compute units. These are significantly higher than the two compute units found in the Raphael (desktop) and the Dragon Range HX (laptop) chips.
All the Ryzen 7040 series chips are based on the Zen 4 architecture and have 35-45W TDPs. The top two chips in the lineup will have 8 cores and 16 threads, while the Ryzen 5 SKU will be a 6-core part with 12 threads. The 7940HS will have a boost clock of up to 5.2GHz, while the 7840HS and 7640HS will have boost clocks of up to 5.1GHz and 5GHz, respectively. AMD is expected to launch the Ryzen 7040 series in March 2023, and buyers will be hoping that there will be no more unwanted adjustments to the specs between now and then.
