The Model Y is one of the best-selling electric cars in the world, but how does the Tesla crossover stack up to the Volvo C40 Recharge?
Recent price adjustments and an EV tax credit have made the Model Y more affordable in 2023. Tesla offers the crossover in two options — Long Range ($54,990) and Performance ($58,990). Both trims feature a Dual-Motor AWD system. The Performance variant brings increased speed (155 mph), lowered suspension, 21-inch Überturbine wheels, and a few other upgrades. The Volvo C40 Recharge comes in three variants – Core ($56,395), Plus ($57,945), and Ultimate ($61,195). Unfortunately, the C40 Recharge doesn’t qualify for a tax credit.
Tesla Vs. Volvo: Range, Performance, & Charging
The C40 Recharge features a twin-motor AWD drivetrain that delivers 402 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque. The Volvo’s top speed maxes out at 112 mph, which is much lower than the Model Y, which can go up to 135 mph for the Long Range and 155 mph for the Performance trim. The C40 EV outshines the Model Y in towing as it features a payload capacity of 4,409 lbs, while the latter manages 3,500 lbs when equipped with a Tow Hitch, which is available for an additional $1,000.
When it comes to charging, the Volve C40 Recharge takes 37 minutes to go from 10 percent to 80 percent when connected to a DC fast charger, while a Level 2 connector will deliver a full charge in approximately eight hours. Buyers also get three years of access to Electrify America’s network. Meanwhile, the Model Y can be charged at home either through a mobile cord (two to three miles per hour) or the Tesla wall connector (44 miles per hour). Public charging through a Destination Charger adds 44 miles per hour, while a Supercharger can add up to 200 miles in 15 minutes. Drivers can utilize the trip planner function which displays available Superchargers on their route.
The C40 Recharge and Model Y come with Pilot Assist and Autopilot/Full Self-Driving driver assistance systems, respectively. Pilot Assist features a 360-degree parking view, cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and more. Autopilot brings cruise control, autosteer, navigate on Autopilot, autopark, and smart summon, while FSD builds on the functionalities of Autopilot and adds traffic light and stop sign control. Based on Consumer Reports‘ recent tests of 12 driver assistance systems, Autopilot comes in at the seventh spot, which isn’t too great, but better than Pilot Assist that’s placed in the 11th position.
The Model Y is one of the hottest EVs on the market, and compared to the C40 Recharge, is the better all round vehicle when it comes to performance and range. While it lacks popular features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, its touchscreen offers several entertainment features, including Apple Music and Steam integration. Additionally, the Model Y offers more cargo room (76 cu.ft.) than the Volvo (49 cu.ft.). Coupled with a cheaper price tag and tax rebate, the Tesla Model Y is the better option for those who want an EV crossover.
